Fundamentals is a second level course and will begin our exploration of teaching methods and cueing techniques.
Fundamentals includes 17 hours of guided learning, and an overall commitment of approximately 55 hours for folks wishing to receive a certificate of completion.
Registration for Fundamentals both online and in St. John's in March 2026 are now open! Apply Here.
Fundamentals is our level two course intended for folks who already have a base knowledge in anatomy and movement (Foundation, or an equivalent, is it's prerequisite). We will continue to study anatomy and movement, but deepen our understanding by incorporating movement’s relationship to breath. We will explore the art of cueing movement, and setting our students up for success.
Much like its prequel Foundation, in Fundamentals, we continue talking about movement of the body, but now we introduce practice teaching. We use what we know thus far to continue exploring other movements, alternative ways of approaching them, and begin our practice of sharing movement with others. We introduce small props in Fundamentals, including the Pilates squishy ball and very light weights between 1 and 3lbs.
Anatomically, Fundamentals focuses on more supportive core muscles, the anatomy of breathing, and shoulder and hip stability. Methodologically, Fundamentals is informed by the principles of Pilates.
Your main course leader at the Academy is Robyn Breen, who's been a movement educator for over 18 years. Robyn started teaching dance as a teenager, before taking her first Pilates Teacher Training Course in 2007. She holds a BFA (Honours) in Dance from York University, and is a graduate of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre (now known as Dance Arts Institute).
Robyn's full list of certifications, courses and workshops is long and diverse (and available by request). Some highlights include:
Balanced Body (Movement Principles, Pilates Reformer Levels 1, 2, and 3)
Yoga Detour's extensive Pre and Post Natal Certification
Madeleine Shen Lopez and Camila Seeger's Integrative Axis Syllabus Course
Mindful Strength's Teacher Program for Strength Training (focus: strength training, progressive class programming, pain science, and accessibility)
Your guest lecturer for Fundamentals is Robin Lacambra (they/she), a queer Filipinx creative, speaker, and facilitator. Drawing from somatic relational psychotherapy, mindful movement, and conflict mediation, Robin’s work aims to demonstrate how interconnected we are, highlighting our shared responsibility to co-create a just and liberated world.
Alongside their roles as the creator of GOODBODYFEEL Movement & Therapy, the director of the Safer Spaces Project, and a counsellor at SACHA (Sexual Assault Center of Hamilton Area), Robin works with individuals, groups, and organizations to foster self-awareness, resilience, and healthier relationships.
